Japan might be appealing for visitors, but actually living there even for a short period of time can often give you another perspective of the country. If you want to experience life in Japan short-term, you’ll first have to find a place to stay. This is where the culture shocks begin. There aren’t many apartment hotels in this country, so if you’re planning to base yourself in one spot for a while, you’ll need to choose between an apartment for rent or a hotel.
When living in a Japanese apartment, one thing that surprises foreigners is the bathroom. Don’t worry, you won’t find traditional squat toilets in most places. It’s a western-style toilet that you’re going to find, but it’s one from the future. Rent a flat with a “washlet” and you’re in for a treat. Some are even automated and will open their lids when you approach them. But apartments with such high-quality lavatories can be more expensive.
If you’ve decided to rent an apartment, you’ll want to know a thing or two about the Japanese home culture. For example, remember that the Japanese usually take off their shoes before entering a home. Wearing shoes in your own apartment isn’t a problem, but it’ll make a better impression if you clean up the floor a bit before moving out. The Japanese will generally appreciate it if you try your best to keep things clean and tidy.
