There are various apartments styles available in Japan. While older buildings tend to be more traditional Japanese-style, most modern apartments have western designs. But there are some differences you should be aware of. For example, note that wooden floorings might not be as sturdy as in western countries because they’re generally made for use without shoes.
You might also be surprised by the unique form of windows in Japan. Most are the sliding type with screens installed to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes during the summer. Japan receives a lot of rain, so oftentimes you’ll have to keep them closed.
Regardless of the type of property, one staple appliance that you’ll find in a Japanese home is a rice cooker. Rent a furnished apartment and chances are there will be one in the kitchen. You might not be accustomed to these, but you can go buy some Japanese rice and try cooking some yourself. The rice might taste stickier than what you’re used to but that’s part of the experience.
